Bodhisattva rests on a simple yet demanding proposition: that enlightenment is not rare, distant, or reserved, but already present. Satish Gupta begins from a quieter premise: that all beings already carry the seed of awakening, though few recognise it. What separates awakening from forgetfulness is not effort or transcendence, but compassion - the capacity to remain open to the world as it is. The sculpture in gold lends luminosity, but not transcendence; it does not separate the bodhisattva from the human condition. Instead, it holds the form in a state of composure, where awareness remains embodied and accessible. What distinguishes this work is its refusal to dramatise awakening. There is no moment of revelation, no rupture from ordinary life. Enlightenment is suggested not as arrival, but as orientation - a way of being attentive to suffering without turning away from it. In this sense, the sculpture functions less as an image and more as a reminder. Awakening is not elsewhere. It unfolds through compassion, quietly, and without spectacle. Bodhisattva holds this understanding with patience, allowing the possibility that what is sought may already be present, waiting only to be recognised.
