Satish Gupta
Brahmand inhabits the threshold of beginning. At its centre rests a golden orb, dense and radiant, held within a surrounding field of copper panels etched with flowing, wave-like patterns.
These surfaces suggest a cosmic ocean in motion - billowing, restless, and vast - encircling a singular point of concentrated energy. The work gathers its force inward, holding the moment where stillness gives way to movement.
The golden seed pulses with latent energy, evoking the singularity from which space and time unfold. Light emanates from the orb and returns to it, creating a quiet circulation that animates the surrounding structure. Copper carries the gravity of this enclosure, while gold holds the intensity of beginning - compressed, concentrated, and charged.
Gupta’s conception of Brahmand draws from multiple temporal registers. The spark for the work emerged from the miniature Hiranyagarbha by Manaku of Guler, where the cosmic egg appears as a vessel of creation. This memory converged with contemporary encounters - with the primal sound of colliding black holes and images captured by the James Webb Space Telescope. Past and future meet within the sculpture, allowing ancient cosmologies and modern astrophysics to resonate within the same field.
Brahmand holds the moment before expansion. It gathers energy without dispersing it, offering a space to sense origin as vibration rather than narrative. The sculpture does not move, yet it carries the presence of becoming - an image of the universe poised at its first breath.
