Jyoti Bhatt (b. 1934, Bhavnagar, Gujarat) is one of India’s most significant contemporary artists, renowned for his work in printmaking and photography. A graduate of M. S. University, Baroda, Bhatt studied under the mentorship of K. G. Subramanyan, which led him to explore the intersection of art and craft. His journey took him to Italy and the United States, where exposure to abstract expressionism influenced his early works, which shifted from cubism to pop art and eventually to folk-inspired designs.
Bhatt’s work in printmaking earned him widespread acclaim, and he became a key figure in the Baroda Group of Artists. His photo documentation of traditional Indian craft and design, started in the late 1960s, became a major part of his artistic output.
He has received numerous honors, including the Padma Shri (2019) and the National Award from the Lalit Kala Akademi (1963-64). Bhatt lives and works in Vadodara.
