Thota Vaikuntam (b. 1942, Boorugupali, Andhra Pradesh) is a celebrated Indian artist known for his vibrant depictions of rural life, particularly inspired by the women of Telangana. His fascination with female characters began in childhood, influenced by the travelling theatre groups in his village. Vaikuntam’s artwork is imbued with a sense of strength, created through bold primary colours such as red, saffron, and orange, which reflect the essence of Indian culture.

A graduate of the College of Fine Arts, Hyderabad, and Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda, Vaikuntam’s career spans over several decades, with his first solo exhibition held in 1973. His works have been exhibited in prestigious galleries across India and internationally, including shows in New York, Singapore, and Dubai. He has received numerous accolades, including the National Award for Painting (1993) and the Biennale Award from Bharat Bhavan, Bhopal (1988-89).

Vaikuntam currently lives and works in Hyderabad.
