Amit Ambalal (b. 1943, Ahmedabad) made a radical career shift from the family’s textile business to become a full-time painter at the age of 36. Trained privately under Gujarati artist Chhaganlal Jadhav, Ambalal’s work combines personal experiences with diverse influences. His paintings reflect a playful yet deep exploration of daily life, often using humor and irony to depict ordinary characters in unusual, theatrical scenarios. His works are marked by unexpected details and emotional depth, turning mundane subjects into engaging visual narratives.
A founding member of the Contemporary Painters Group in Ahmedabad, Ambalal is associated with key art institutions like Bharat Bhavan, the National Gallery of Modern Art, and the National Institute of Fashion Technology. Known for his collection of Pichwais—devotional cloth paintings—Ambalal has been featured in a documentary by Doordarshan Ahmedabad. He continues to live and work in Ahmedabad.
